HRT Extends OnDemand Ridesharing Through December

NEWPORT NEWS and VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is extending its OnDemand Ridesharing service in Newport News and Virginia Beach through December following a successful pilot program.

OnDemand provides an affordable transportation option for those without vehicles and in areas with limited fixed-route bus service. OnDemand was scheduled to end in September but will now run through the end of the year in one zone in each of the two cities.

“We are pleased with the results so far and look forward to further growth to ensure customers have access to new transit solutions that are reliable, safe, efficient and sustainable,” William E. Harrell, HRT’s President and CEO.

HRT’s OnDemand operates within a 20-square-mile zone in Newport News and a 15-square-mile zone in Virginia Beach using minivans.

Customers can book on the HRT OnDemand mobile app (available in the Apple Store and on Google Play) or by calling (757) 859-8294. Rides are just $2 one way per ride, just like HRT’s other modes of service. Kids under 17 ride free with a paying adult. Free fares are offered for qualified paratransit riders and Student Freedom Pass holders.

Service is available Mondays through Fridays from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.
