Free fare service will continue through June 30, 2020.
This is part of the continuing effort to limit social contact by allowing customers to forgo paying a fare, limit interaction with the operator, and eliminate physical contact with the farebox, which is one of the most touched objects in a transit bus.
During this period, HRT also is encouraging customers to board and exit at the rear of the bus, if they are able, while handicapped patrons and others requiring the bus to kneel for easy front access can still board at the front.
HRT continues to encourage all residents to avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is necessary, the use of a face mask by all persons is encouraged for the safety of bus operators and other customers.
All HRT vehicles, except light rail, are equipped with electronic fare boxes. Fare boxes accept cash, coins and GoPasses. Fare boxes and/or vehicle operators cannot make change, so please have exact fare when boarding. All sales are final. HRT does not give refunds on any purchases.
A GoPass allows you to ride any HRT bus, ferry, or light rail route as many times as you want within the period of the GoPass. Customers may ride our MAX service with a GoPass, however, an upgrade fee may be required.
What is GoPass365
The GoPass365 remains active for 365 days. It’s purchased by colleges, employers, and consortiums to help with the transportation needs of students and employees, or as an incentive or benefit. Get complete details on GoPass365.
What is a Trip
All other fares shown are Single-Trip fares. A single trip is defined as the point at which the passenger boards the vehicle until the vehicle reaches the next published terminal point. After reaching the terminal point, all passengers must exit the vehicles. If the passenger desires to use the same bus for the next portion of his or her trip, he or she may re-board to begin the next trip.

In all cases, the Student Freedom Pass will expire two months after the student’s expected high school graduation date, or the 18th birthday, whichever is later. Any exceptions to this policy will be handled on a case by case basis. Any customers requesting free or Discounted Fare must present a State/Government/Military ID with qualifying age upon request.
If any of HRT’s Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) in Hampton Roads fail to give proper change, it is programmed to issue an IOU. Any valid IOU up to $5 can be redeemed Monday-Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at one of our Transit Center locations. Claims must be accompanied by a valid IOU or receipt. Any claim over $5 will be issued by check and mailed. For more information, please call HRT Customer Service during normal business hours.
If your one-way trip to and from your destination does not require you to transfer — use multiple bus/light rail/ferry — it’s cheaper to pay two single-trip fares ($2.00 + $2.00 = $4.00). Remember though, for just another fifty cents (a 1-Day GoPass for $4.50), you can take any HRT mode (except MAX routes) along whatever route HRT serves that day as much as you want. That’s a good deal for fifty cents. HRT can get you there.
