Snow Route Plan – Hampton Roads Transit

Snow Route Plan

If the forecast calls for up to six inches of snow or more, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will announce its decision to either cancel all transit service or operate snow routes by 2:00 p.m. as it relates to HRT’s next service day.

Bus Service

When the snow plan is activated, HRT will severely reduce bus service to include only core bus routes primarily serving major roads and some transit centers.

Service will operate as per the Snowfall Table below Monday through Saturday with no Sunday service.

Light Rail & Ferry

The Tide Light Rail and the Elizabeth River Ferry will operate every 30-minutes Monday through Saturday between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Sunday service will be determined based on the severity of the projected inclement weather event.

Transit service is subject to change based on storm intensity.
Customers should expect delays.

Snowfall Table

  • Dusting of 2 inches
    Regular Service (Possible delays)
  • 2 inches to 6 inches
Snow Routes (Service from 10:00 a.m. to no later than 8:00 p.m.)
  • 6 inches and above
    No Service

There are 19 bus routes scheduled to operate on the Southside between Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, and 6 routes scheduled to operate on the Northside between Hampton and Newport News.

Core bus routes will shift service onto roads that are more likely to be plowed and will not operate through neighborhoods, due to difficult travel conditions or geography. Passengers will be able to board and exit the bus at all regular and temporary bus stops along each snow route.

Look for “Snow Route” on the destination sign on the front of the bus.

Our number one priority is SAFETY. The safety of our riders, bus operators, and our staff comes before anything else. The secondary priority is to provide limited service to our customers (weather permitting). If your bus is running late, please remember safety first! Your driver is doing his or her best to make sure you arrive at your destination safely.

Every attempt will be made to provide accurate and timely information. Passengers may experience service delays and increased wait times due to road conditions. Customers traveling should be aware that HRT may have to suspend all service or change routes and operating hours at any time, if road and weather conditions worsen or travel becomes unsafe.

Buses will not service EVMC, MacArthur Square, Ballentine/Broad Creek and Military Highway Light Rail Stations during a severe snowfall. In addition, some bus stops on serviced routes will be skipped. Refer to the following table:

Safety Tips

Dress Accordingly
Although your ride on the bus will be warm, your trip to and from the bus stop may not be. Your wait at your stop can be dangerous if you’re not dressed for the weather so dress to stay dry and warm.

Be Safe
When waiting for the bus at a bus stop, stay on the sidewalk until the bus comes to a complete stop.

Step Carefully
Bus steps can become slippery from snow. Kick the snow from your shoes or boots before stepping on the bus. Use the handrails and take your time when boarding or exiting the bus.

Be careful on the platform
Walk slowly on the rail station platforms. Stay away from the edge of the platform, and wait until the train stops completely.
