goCommute Marks 30 Years of  Transportation Demand Management Program

NORFOLK, Va. — Tired of driving alone? With fall upon us, it’s time to rethink your commute for a new routine.

goCommute is marking the 30th anniversary of the Transportation Demand Management (TDM) program for Hampton Roads. To celebrate, goCommute is giving away a four-pack of William & Mary football tickets when you sign up for the ConnectingVA app to log your trips.

The program launched in 1995 as TRAFFIX before its rebranding last year to goCommute. For three decades, it has helped reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in the region by promoting alternatives to driving alone, including carpooling, vanpooling, public transit, teleworking, and active transportation like walking and biking.

“For 30 years, this program has been helping Hampton Roads commuters move smarter.  What began as TRAFFIX has grown into goCommute, reflecting not just a new name, but a renewed commitment to give people real choices in how they move around the region,” said Amy Jordan, executive director. “This anniversary is about honoring the partnerships that brought us here and looking ahead to a future where sustainable, reliable, and connected transportation options are at the heart of the how the region moves forward.”

The updated name and refreshed visual identity, introduced in November 2024, reflect the program’s commitment to deliver smart, sustainable commuter solutions across Hampton Roads, emphasizing workforce accessibility and meaningful partnerships with employers, the military and commuters.

goCommute is operated by Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) with funding provided through the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO).

To enter for a four-pack of tickets to the William & Mary homecoming game on Oct. 18., log at least five trips in the last 30 days in the ConnectingVA app. Find the raffle under the “Featured” category in the Rewards section. The Last day to enter is Oct. 3.

goCo Benefits

With variable tolling being introduced with the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) and expanded Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel project, sharing a ride to carpool or vanpool will have even greater benefits. The program includes:

Ride matching and commuter rewards: goCo offers carpool matching, connecting neighbors, colleagues and friends who are commuting to the same place you. Find your match and get rewards from local and national sponsors when you share the ride, use transit, telework, walk, or bike to and from any occasion (work, recreation, shopping). Participants use the ConnectingVA app to log trips to earn points for discounts, coupons and monthly raffles.

Guaranteed ride home: With the ConnectingVA Ride Home Rewards Program in partnership with the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, you get a reliable ride back to your point of origin if you have an unexpected family emergency after you arrive at work, become ill at work, or if you need to work unscheduled overtime.

Vanpool assistance: Vanpooling is a convenient, cost-effective way for employees to get to work. goCo partners with Commute with Enterprise, enabling commuters to lease a late-model, 7- to 15-passenger van or SUV to share a ride to work. The total cost, including insurance, maintenance, fuel and tolls, is divided among the riders. goCo provides a monthly $500 subsidy to each qualified vanpool.

Park & Rides: Use convenient free public parking to park your car so you can transfer to a carpool, vanpool or transit such as bus, light rail or ferry. There’s no charge to park in these lots, but registration may be required.

Bike Boost: Bike racks and repair stations throughout the region make it easier to commute on two wheels.

GoPass 365 is an annual commuter farecard for HRT services that include bus, ferry, light rail and trolley. Employers, colleges and business consortiums can purchase discounted passes to save transit riders up to 72 percent off the cost of fare. Employers may offer a monthly commuter benefit to employees who use transit or vanpool for commuting. This benefit can be provided as either pre-tax or direct. In 2024, the IRS permits a tax-free amount of up to $315 per month for transit and vanpool expenses.
goCommute serves the cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg; the counties of Isle of Wight, James City, and York; and a portion of Gloucester County, Franklin (city), and Southampton County.

In fiscal year 2024, the program saved 4 million traveled vehicles miles, reducing emissions by 1,727 tons. To learn more, visit www.goCommute.org.
