NORFOLK, Va. – Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) has launched a new webpage to introduce kids and teenagers to transit.
The new page is designed to help youth, parents and teachers ride HRT’s modes of transit while sharing safety tips to make the most of every trip.
“Kids and young adults are the transit riders of tomorrow,” said William E. Harrell, President and CEO. “With this new tool, we are further engaging this crucial population with programs and opportunities so our youth feel empowered and confident navigating transit in the six cities we serve.”
The new website, at gohrt.com/kids-young-adults, has something for all ages:
- Teens can learn more about HRT’s Student Freedom Pass, which gives students ages 13 to 17 the ability to ride all modes of transit for free. HRT started the program to help students attend school and after-school programs and to have jobs without relying on parents to get around. With fewer teens getting driver’s licenses, the pass is the perfect way to get around this summer and next school year.
- Student Freedom Pass holders can learn more about the new Student Transit Riders Commission, which provides leadership opportunities to shape the future of transit. The Commission will be made up of Student Freedom Pass riders from each of the six cities served by HRT. It will mirror the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads, HRT’s governing board. HRT is accepting applications from students in grades 9-12 who are interested in serving.
- Elementary-school kids can learn about HRT’s modes through the Gus & Friends activity book. Illustrated and written by HRT, it tells the story of Mike the Bike’s adventure trying to get back to his owner when left on Gus the Bus. It features Gail the Light Rail, Dan the Van and more.
- Educators and schools will find information to bring transit to them with details about travel training field trips for school groups, free activity books and classroom book readings about transit.
- Parent resources on the webpage include links to route schedules and maps, safety tips, learning how to ride and other planning resources
