NORFOLK, Va. — May is Bike Month, and goCommute, in partnership with Hampton Roads Transit (HRT), is ready to connect you to the region’s cycling resources with events and activities throughout the month.
Bike Expos in Hampton and Norfolk
Kick off Bike Month with two Bike Expos. Learn about places to ride, rules of the road, and bike maintenance tips. Visit with local bike shops, cycling groups, bike and trail advocates, local organizations and more. The events are free and open to the public:
- April 30 from 5-7 p.m. at Hampton Main Library, 4207 Victoria Blvd.
- May 1 from 5-7 p.m. at Slover Library in Norfolk, 235 E Plume St.
Bike to Work Week, May 12-16
Explore just how fast, easy and convenient biking to work can be during this year’s Bike to Work Week, May 12-16. goCommute can help you get out of your car and change up your commute.
Then, on Bike to Work Day, May 16, you can join the fun on the way to work. Grab some snacks and water at these four pit stops:
- High Street ferry dock in Portsmouth from 6:30-8 a.m.
- Waterside ferry dock in Norfolk from 6:30-8 a.m.
- EVMC/Fort Norfolk light rail station from 6:30-8 a.m.
- Newtown Road light rail station from 6:30-8 a.m.
Biking Events all Month Long
In addition to the Bike Expos, goCommute is participating in several biking and community events:
- April 25-27, Langley Air Show, Hampton. April 25 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., April 26 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and April 27 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
- April 27, Norfolk NATO Festival International Village, Town Point Park, 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
- May 2, Bike Night at the Zoo, 3-5 p.m. prior to the family friendly, after-hours ride through the zoo from 5-8 p.m. Virginia Zoo, 3500 Granby St., Norfolk.
- May 3, Pedal the Parkway, Williamsburg, 7 a.m.-1 p.m.
- May 4, Tour de Orf. Group ride through Norfolk starting at 3 p.m. from Smartmouth Brewing Co., 1309 Raleigh Ave. This 10-mile ride along the Elizabeth River Trail and Norfolk bike lanes takes approximately one hour.
- May 16, Portsmouth Mayor’s Lunchtime Bike Ride, noon-1 p.m. Join Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover for a lunchtime bike ride on Bike to Work Day, and stop by the goCommute table for information on exploring bike to work options in Hampton Roads.

Take Your Bike on Transit
With bike-ready buses, The Tide light rail and Elizabeth River Ferry, HRT can get you where you want to go without the hassles of driving and parking – saving you money while getting exercise.
HRT customers are encouraged to take their bicycles on any mode of transit at no additional charge. Every HRT bus has a bike rack for two bicycles on the front of the bus and riders can stow their bikes before boarding. For light rail and ferry, just walk on your bike and look for bike storage racks.
