HRT to Provide Free Fares Feb. 10 for Transit Equity Day

NORFOLK, Va. – Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) once again will provide free fares
on Monday, Feb. 10 to commemorate Transit Equity Day, a National Day of Action commemorating investment in public transit for the benefit of all citizens.

The day recognizes transit rider and civil-rights icon Rosa Parks, whose birthday is Feb. 4. HRT will provide free bus, light rail, ferry, OnDemand ridesharing and paratransit services on the Monday following her birthday, which this year is Feb. 10.

“HRT is committed to treating all customers with dignity with the best possible transit experience every day, to every customer,” said William E. Harrell, President and CEO of HRT. “By continuing to offer free fares on this special day for the fourth straight year, we honor the lasting legacy of Rosa Parks and how her courageous act continues to impact transit agencies around the nation.”

In addition to free fares, bus headlights will remain on all day to symbolize the light Parks provided. Every HRT bus also will have a reserved front seat with a small sign to honor Parks’ act of courage that ultimately helped make transit more equitable for all.

This year, HRT is partnering with WNSB-FM (Hot 91) as part of the radio station’s “Random Acts of Kindness” week to distribute giveaways at HRT’s Downtown Norfolk Transit Center in the morning and the Hampton Transit Center in the afternoon. HRT staff also will read the book “I am Rosa Parks” to area elementary schools throughout February.

Parks’ right to travel on public transit was about more than the seat. It was about the freedom to travel to work, school or play unconstrained by the biases of others. HRT stands in support of these concepts and embraces their memories as it works to provide public transit for all citizens.
