HRT Ridership Surges in 2024

NORFOLK, Va. – Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) ridership grew by 25.8 percent in 2024 over the year earlier.

The number of individual trips on HRT bus, light rail, ferry and paratransit services totaled 9.63 million, compared to 7.43 million in 2023.

While still below pre-Covid levels, HRT saw the third-highest increase in ridership nationally among transit agencies of similar size, according to the American Public Transportation Association.

“This increase in ridership reflects the trust our customers have in us to connect Hampton Roads with transportation solutions on the road, on the rail and in the water that are reliable, safe, efficient and sustainable,” said William E. Harrell, HRT’s President and CEO. “These results also validate our initiatives in technology, marketing and workforce development to ensure we meet increasing demand today and into the future.”
