HRT Invites Residents to Learn More About 4 Potential Transit Options in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Hampton Roads Transit (HRT), in collaboration with the City of Chesapeake, is hosting a public meeting and four pop-up events this month to share updates and seek input for Connecting Chesapeake: A Study of High-Capacity Transit.

Working closely with the community, the Connecting Chesapeake project team is evaluating the need for high-capacity transit service, identifying and screening potential corridors, and determining the best alternatives to enhance the City’s economy, align with future growth plans, and improve connectivity to the regional transportation network.

The study team recently shared four possible alignment alternatives with the public and is in the process of completing the Tier 2 analysis, which includes an evaluation of modes of transit (express bus, bus rapid transit or light rail), ridership potential, stop locations, a high-level environmental review, service plans, and travel times.

As part of its public outreach efforts, HRT has been meeting with small groups and area businesses and talking to customers at transit centers.

“Community input is crucial to our study because public feedback is essential to creating a transit system that works for everyone,” said Sherri Dawson, Director of Transit Development for HRT. “This is about connecting people and places in a way that fits Chesapeake and the region’s needs both now and in the future.”

The public is invited to learn more and view the four conceptual alignment alternatives by attending any of these upcoming public events:
