Hampton and Norfolk, Va. – Hampton Roads Transit’s VB Wave season ended about a month ago. Still, the trolleys found a new purpose in the off-season as the staging ground for a hurricane relief supply drive. HRT collected 2,500 pounds in donations for Operation Blessing, a Virginia Beach-based humanitarian organization.
VB Wave Trolleys were parked outside Hampton Headquarters on Victoria Boulevard and the Norfolk administration building at Armistead Avenue and 18th Street. HRT employees volunteered to staff the trolleys from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for two days, making it easy for the public to drop off much-needed supplies. By the end of day two, both trolleys were packed with diapers, baby wipes, feminine hygiene products, and other necessities that will be passed on to victims of the recent hurricanes.
“We are grateful for the community’s overwhelming generosity. These results reflect the strength of our HRT team and the communities we serve.”
William E. Harrell
HRT President and CEO
HRT staff delivered the donations to Operation Blessing’s warehouse in Chesapeake on Friday, Nov. 1.
“We asked, and the community really delivered: over a ton of relief supplies! Thank you, Hampton Roads, for stepping up in a huge way. These supplies will be a tremendous help to fellow citizens in other states who are still struggling after the recent hurricanes. Thank you, also, to HRT for facilitating this community initiative.”
Gordon Robertson
President of Operation Blessing
The collection drive was an initiative of HRT Cares, an employee group supporting fellow employees and community organizations.
