Transit Travel is Free on Election Day

NORFOLK, Va. — Riding Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) buses, light rail, ferry, paratransit and upcoming microtransit will be free on Election Day, Nov. 5., to help voters get to the polls.

“With free-fare access to HRT’s comprehensive transit solutions throughout Hampton Roads, we want to make sure we’re doing our part to facilitate mobility on Election Day,” said William E. Harrell, President and CEO.

According to the U.S. Census, an average of 2.4 percent of Americans reported transportation as the main roadblock to not voting in the 2020 presidential election.

Election Day is one of four free fare days offered by HRT. Transit Equity Day (Feb. 4, 2025), Earth Day (April 22) and Juneteenth (June 19) are also opportunities for Hampton Roads residents to try transit at no cost.
