Fans Encouraged to Ride the Tide and Ferry for Savannah Bananas Games

City of Norfolk Offering Free Trips on Light Rail and Ferry

NORFOLK, Va. – Congestion will be bananas when a popular exhibition baseball team plays at Harbor Park stadium this weekend for three sold-out games.

Fans with tickets to see the Savannah Bananas are encouraged to take the Tide light rail and Elizabeth River Ferry at no cost to avoid congestion and limited parking.

Courtesy of the City of Norfolk, free rides on the Tide will be available starting four hours before each game on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, as well as two hours after each game. That’s an increase of two hours before gametime currently available for Norfolk Tides baseball games. Trains will operate about every 10 minutes prior to and after each game.

Meanwhile, special ferry service, also compliments of the City of Norfolk, will be operating between North Landing in Portsmouth and Harbor Park, just steps from the stadium. This special service runs every 30 minutes beginning four hours before each game until one hour after each game ends.

Fans can show their game ticket for free rides.

The Bananas will play at Harbor Park on Friday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 18 at 1 p.m.

Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will begin light rail and ferry service as follows:

  • Aug. 16 at 3 p.m.
  • Aug. 17 at 3 p.m.
  • Aug. 18 at 9 a.m.

Fans can park for free at four lots to catch the Tide:

  • Newtown Road Station, Newtown Road and Kempsville Road.
  • Military Highway Station, Curlew Drive and Corporate Boulevard.
  • Ballentine/Broad Creek Station, Ballentine Boulevard and I-264.
  • EVMC/Fort Norfolk Station, Brambleton and Colley Avenues. This location is available only for Saturday and Sunday games – parking is not allowed on Friday night.

Fans are also encouraged to use paid lots downtown to the west of Harbor Park. In addition to stadium sellouts, the annual Norfolk Waterfront Jazz Festival will be held at Town Point Park on Friday and Saturday from 5-11 p.m.

HRT will have staff on hand to guide fans at the Harbor Park Station platform after each game while keeping them safe around the tracks. One queue will be dedicated to eastbound stations (toward Newtown Road) while another line will get fans to the westbound tracks (toward EVMC/Fort Norfolk).

Those taking the ferry can use parking garages in Portsmouth conveniently located near the North Landing ferry landing.
