Renovated TRAFFIX Office Serves Commuters at Naval Base

NORFOLK, Va. — The TRAFFIX commuter options program, administered by Hampton Roads Transit (HRT), today debuted its renovated office at Naval Station Norfolk as part of ongoing support of regional military bases and personnel.

The refreshed TRAFFIX office provides active-duty service members, civilian employees, dependents and visitors with commuter information and resources about vanpools, carpools, transit, walking, biking, teleworking and other transportation options available through HRT, TRAFFIX and the Department of Defense.

Staff at the office coordinate with Hampton Roads military installations on the federal Transportation Incentive Program (TIP) and Mass Transportation Benefit Program (MTBP). These can save eligible users up to $315 a month to commute via transit or vanpool.

“We help save our service members time and money while connecting them to their communities,” HRT’s president and CEO William E. Harrell said during a ribbon cutting and open house attended by Capt. Janet Days, the base Commanding Officer, and invited guests. “The renovation is already paying off with more service members and civilians stopping by than ever before.”

It’s the first renovation of the 120-square-foot space since it opened in 2008 on the world’s largest naval base. “This renovation was a labor of love,” Harrell said. “It took hours of hard work from a dedicated team of employees to complete this transformation.”

The office is the latest example of HRT’s commitment to support Hampton Roads military personnel, their families and workers.

In partnership with Naval Station Norfolk, HRT operates the Base Express, a free shuttle bus service helping sailors and their families, government employees, veterans and Navy contractors move around the base and visit the Navy Exchange (NEX) Mall.

Starting at the NEX, the Gold Route provides last-mile service from outside the gate, as well as access to HRT buses, shopping, and entertainment off base. The Blue Route, meanwhile, operates exclusively on the base to move sailors around. The Base Express carries between 4,000-5,000 passengers every month.

“Over the past 18 months, the Base Express has become not just a mode of transportation, but a lifeline connecting our military personnel to their place of duty, shopping and even out into the Hampton Roads community,” Days said. “We appreciate the partnership and the continuity of effort.”

“Working together with Naval Station Norfolk, we have bridged a gap in transportation,” Harrell said. “Our mission at HRT is to connect the region with transportation solutions that are reliable, safe, efficient, and sustainable. Our renovated base office, along with the popular Base Express, are testaments to what we can do when we work together to achieve a mission.”
