NORFOLK, Va. — Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) today announced that Elizabeth River Ferry service will be fully restored effective Friday, May 24 at 5:30 a.m. following completion of the City of Norfolk’s construction of a temporary access ramp to the ferry dock at Waterside.
Beginning with the first departures of the day – and in time for Memorial Day weekend – full service will be available with the re-opening of the Waterside landing in downtown Norfolk and the resumption of service at North Landing in Portsmouth, which had been temporarily closed to consolidate Portsmouth service at High Street.
Now, full service will again be available at Waterside in Norfolk and both the North Landing and High Street ferry stops in Portsmouth. The Harbor Park ferry stop in Norfolk, having served as the primary landing to maintain service across the river, will revert to its regular service to and from North Landing only before and after Norfolk Tides baseball home games, starting with Tuesday’s game.
“We thank the City of Norfolk and its leadership for quickly designing and implementing a safe and functional solution so we can restore regular service for our customers,” said William E. Harrell, President and CEO of HRT. “At the same time, we appreciate the patience of our customers during a temporary workaround. We look forward to another popular summer for the ferry, and we invite the public to cross the river with us for unparalleled access to – and views of – downtown Norfolk and Olde Towne Portsmouth.”
The extended summer ferry schedule, which begins on Memorial Day, includes 15-minute service frequencies in the afternoons and evenings on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to augment 30-minute service in each direction Mondays through Thursdays.
