The Public is Invited to View High-Capacity Transit Potential Alignments in Chesapeake

NORFOLK, VA – Hampton Roads Transit (HRT), in collaboration with the City of Chesapeake, announces pop-up events and a Facebook livestream to allow the public to view and provide feedback on 16 conceptual alignment alternatives for high-capacity transit connecting activity centers within Chesapeake and to the greater Hampton Roads area.
Working closely with the community, Connecting Chesapeake: A Study of High-Capacity Transit is evaluating the need for high-capacity transit service, identifying and screening potential corridors, and determining the best alternatives that enhance the City’s economy, align with future growth plans, and improve connectivity to the regional transportation network. The study kicked off in summer 2023 and held the first round of public outreach in October.
High-capacity transit is a form of public transit that typically travels in its own lane or right-of-way. High-capacity transit vehicles can include technologies that prioritize transit to improve mobility and operations.

“Throughout this project we’ve heard from the public that high-capacity transit would benefit the overall Chesapeake community,” said Sherri Dawson, HRT Director of Transit Development. “It’s important that we hear from the community on the options and how they might be used.”

As part of its public outreach efforts, HRT has been meeting with small groups, area businesses, and engaging all aspects of the community. Following feedback from the upcoming pop-up events, the team will further refine the alignment options based on additional factors to include cost, potential ridership, high-capacity transit mode, impacts to adjacent properties, and traffic impacts.
