NORFOLK, VA – Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) has received federal funding to support its growing fleet of electric buses.
The Fiscal Year 2024 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill provided $1 million to help purchase battery electric buses in support of the transition to a zero emissions fleet.
“As a result of considerable efforts by our congressional delegation, we are able to continue our investments in sustainable, clean transportation throughout our service area,” said William E. Harrell, president and CEO of Hampton Roads Transit. “We thank our representatives for working to secure this funding.”
Hampton Roads Transit is working with local, state and federal partners to build a new Southside Bus Operating Facility in Virginia Beach. Once constructed, the new facility will have the ability to service, maintain and store a mixture of existing and zero-emissions buses as well as provide storage for the existing trolley fleet serving the oceanfront. This new facility will enable HRT to expand service and meet the agency’s vision to transition to an all-electric fleet by 2049.
HRT was the first transit agency in Virginia to place electric buses into service. The first six were assigned to some of the busiest routes in Virginia, including Route 20 – HRT’s most popular route – operating along Virginia Beach Boulevard between the Downtown Norfolk Transit Center and the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.
Hampton Roads Transit’s mission is to connect Hampton Roads with transportation solutions that are reliable, safe and efficient and sustainable. For more information on transit services, visit gohrt.com.
