HRT Light Rail Service Resumes After Dump Truck Hits Overpass

NORFOLK, VA – The Tide light rail is back up and running following a brief service interruption this afternoon.

According to Norfolk Police, at around 11:00 a.m., a dump truck hit the overpass at Park and Clairborne Avenues. Out of an abundance of caution, light rail service was suspended. A bus bridge was put in place from Norfolk State University to Eastern Virginia Medical Center while HRT staff and City officials and engineers assessed the damage. They later determined it was superficial and did not pose a threat to light rail operations.

“We are committed to the safety of our staff and passengers. We appreciate the City moving quickly to assess the situation so we could resume operations in a timely manner.”
-William Harrell, President and CEO at Hampton Roads Transit

Norfolk city officials gave the all-clear shortly before 2:00 p.m. and light rail service resumed minutes later.
