Student Transit Riders Commission

Overview

The Student Transit Riders Commission (STRC) was created by Hampton Roads Transit as a platform for students to elevate the teenage voice on concepts directly related to their involvement in transit. This Student Commission is made up of high school students who live in any of our service cities (Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach) and/or attend public, private, or home-based schools in the same area. The STRC serves as a voice and resource for the youth of Hampton Roads. Individuals on the Student Commission meet once a month to exchange views and provide a youth perspective on transit initiatives that are important to them. Membership on this commission gives young people the opportunity to engage with transit officials and decision-makers to communicate from a teen perspective and provide insight on their relationship with public transportation.

Mission

The STRC gives young people in our community opportunities to develop leadership skills, volunteer, learn about transit planning, and creates a space for them to share ideas that will make a difference for the next generation of transit riders. The STRC hosts activities for youth by youth throughout the year. Members discuss, organize and carry out youth-led projects that will promote their peers’ involvement in transit and provide them with more access to their community.

Requirements:

  • Resident of our service cities or enrolled in a service area school
  • Attend regular meetings held monthly, participate in events, commit to 1yr term
  • Demonstrate an interest in the community and the benefits of public transit
  • Parent/Guardian must sign consent for any student 17 or younger
  • Students must be in grades 9-12 in the UPCOMING school year following application
