Transit is a safe, affordable and efficient way to attend festivals, concerts and events without worrying about congestion, parking or the price of gas. Make Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) part of your pre-event planning!
Consider parking for FREE to catch The Tide at three park-and-ride lots: Newtown Road Station, Military Highway Station and Ballentine/Broad Creek Station.
To make things smoother before and after events or during heavy demand, HRT encourages customers to download the GoMobile app and purchase fare ahead of the event, as cell phone service may be limited due to large crowds. This helps to speed up boarding, particularly at light rail stations and ferry landings.
Be sure to plan ahead when traveling with more than one person or one person with a child. To pay for multiple people, simply create a separate virtual card for each person in the GoMobile app. Load each card with any amount you want. Then, swipe and scan each virtual card when boarding. How to download and use GoMobile
Download the HRT GoMobile app and create a virtual card to add money with a credit or debit card. Here’s how to get started.

1 Create Virtual Card
- Click ‘Create Virtual Card’
- Name your virtual card – individual virtual card required per personon mobile app account.

2 Load Your Virtual Card
Click Load Money to add money. Select preset Reload Amount or enter ‘Other’ amount.

3 Select Payment Method
Select ‘Change Payment Method’ to Select or Add your payment method.
- Select Other Payment Methods (Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Pay with cash at select stores) or
- Add New Payment Method (Credit/Debit Card or Commuter Benefits Card)
- Save your Default Payment Method for faster checkout on future orders.
- Next to Default Payment Method, select Change
- Select your Preferred Payment Method from the list.

4 Load Cash at HRT Customer Service Window
- Take cash to any HRT Customer Service Window
- Open HRT GoMobile App and show the Virtual Card to the Rep
- Click on ‘Use’ to generate and present the Virtual Card QR code
- Customer Service Rep will scan and add cash amount to the Virtual Card(s).

5 Now You’re Ready to Ride
Click on ‘Use’ to generate a QR Code
- When boarding the bus, hold phone below the scanner to use virtual fare card.
- This will activate your fare and deduct the appropriate stored value amount.
- If multiple riders are boarding under the same account/device, a unique Virtual Card/QR code must be scanned for each fare paying rider.
- Navigate through multiple Virtual Cards by scrolling up/down.
Fares and discounts
When you load your virtual card with value, be sure you have enough for a round-trip ride.
HRT fares are $2 one way, $4 for roundtrip, and $4.50 for all-day travel.
Children 17 and under ride free with a fare-paying adult. Teens with a Student Freedom Pass ride free as well. Certified discounted fare holders and Paratransit-eligible riders have their own fare. Visit our fares page to learn more.
Heading to a Norfolk Tides baseball game? The Tide light rail and Elizabeth River Ferry are free to and from Harbor Park. Unless otherwise noted, fares are required for events.
