Ridership

Number of passenger boardings (i.e. unlinked trips). Each time a passenger gets on a bus counts as one boarding. Note: This is different from a passenger journey or linked trip, which can be defined as a passenger boarding one or more buses in order to complete a journey or trip from initial origin to final destination.

*1 – Jan 2018 – 4 consecutive days of no service due to inclement weather.

Many factors influence transit ridership, including regional employment levels, availability of service, gas prices, and weather. A study completed by HRT to evaluate factors related to transit ridership in Hampton Roads will be used to support various ridership growth strategies. Transit ridership has been trending down across the United States. Transit agencies, including HRT, are actively working to improve availability of reliable services to meet the needs of more commuters and support local and regional economies.
