Hampton Roads Transit Photo ID Changes Reminder

In June 2018, Hampton Roads Transit began the process of replacing all forms of Photo ID currently used for Discounted or Free Fare, replacing them with higher quality hard plastic cards. All pre-existing Discounted (formerly Half Fare), Paratransit, and Student Freedom IDs will expire on December 31st, 2018, regardless of the expiration date on the card.

Frequently Asked Questions

    1. Card design and construction are the primary keys to determining if your ID card is old or new.  It is new if it is hard plastic (like a government ID) and similar in style to what is pictured below.  It is old if it is simply laminated paper.

    2. Seniors (65 and older) will need to bring a government ID as proof of age. (Along with the old Discounted/Half-Fare ID, if applicable). Note: Patrons who were previously grandfathered in, but who have not yet reached the age of 65 will not be eligible based on age, until turning 65.

    4. Paratransit patrons wishing to utilize their transit benefit will need to bring their Paratransit Card along with a government ID.
    5. Youths ages 13-17 will need to complete the steps outlined at gohrt.com/studentfreedompass.
  2. Do I need an appointment?
    1. No. Just head to your nearest available facility during normal business hours, along with any requisite paperwork and IDs

    1. No. There is no cost for getting the new ID. However, if you lose your new ID, there will be a $15 replacement fee.
  4. What if I can’t make it before the end of the year?
