Light Rail Crossings and Service Delays

Some areas of Hampton Roads experienced severe thunderstorms Friday night (July 15th). A lightning bolt struck close to a light rail signal house on Curlew Drive near the crossing by Military Highway Station.

The strike caused significant damage to the electronic controls inside the house and damaged a crossing gate.  This impacts the crossings between Military Highway and Newtown Road Stations.

These crossings have been taken out of service and all trains will stop and then proceed at each of the crossings. That means trains will stop briefly in an area where they normally proceed without delay. HRT staff is working to repair the damage, but does not yet have an estimate on the time it will take to complete repairs.

In the interim, trains are safely running regular service but please plan for short delays as the trains pass through these areas safely.
